There was a time when I thought my life had come to a standstill. When I was diagnosed with leprosy, at the age of 30 I didn’t just have to fight the disease – I had to battle the stigma and discrimination that came with it. People around me started treating me differently, My neighbours and even close relatives avoided me from their functions and they were not even ready to talk with me .I started doubting myself. The stigma and Discrimination affected my mental health not only that it also affected our daily living .I was working as daily labours . when people get to know about my disease they don’t want me to work at their place , it affects my daily life .
But everything changed when I received proper counseling and treatment. The ALERT team helped me understand that leprosy is curable, and with their support, I regained the confidence to move forward.
With my treatment completed, I decided to use my skills as a tailor to support my family. I started working from home with a sewing machine, stitching clothes and gradually rebuilding my independence. But the challenges weren’t over, my husband was also diagnosed with leprosy. The fear of losing everything again crept in, but we didn’t give up. With timely medical care and guidance, he too recovered completely.
Now, we are stronger than ever. My husband has resumed work, and together, we have brought stability to our family. Our daughter is pursuing a BA degree, and our son is preparing to join the police force. The journey wasn’t easy, but with awareness, treatment, and determination, we overcame the odds.
“Leprosy didn’t define us-we fought back, and we won. Our story is proof that with support and perseverance, no challenge is too great to overcome.”
Bhagyashree and her husband’s journey is a true testament to resilience, proving that with awareness, treatment, and determination, one can overcome adversity and rebuild a dignified life. Their story serves as an inspiration for many, showing that leprosy is not the end, but a challenge that can be conquered with the right support and perseverance.
